  • Title
    Probate of the will of Rev. John Mendham, clerk in holy orders of Clophill Rectory, Beds who died on the 23rd Apr 1869 [badly damaged by water in parts]. Including extract from will dated 18th Feb 1864: - Appointing George Evans and James Phillips of Claremont Lodge, Brixton, Surrey to be executors and trustees. I give, devise, and bequeath: - All household furniture, horses and carriages, implements of husbandry, wines, liquors & house keeping provisions and also all china, linen, glass, watches, jewels to my wife Sophia Mendham. - All ancient and modern books and my manuscripts to my wife. - All my plates, articles and coins to the use of my wife during her life and after her decease I give the plates to my cousin George Evans, esquire, of Her Majesties Customs and the coins to the Bedford Archaeological & Architectural Society. - Annuity or yearly rent charge of £25 (out of Clophill estates) to my Mother Ann Mendham for and during her natural life. - Lands, hereditaments and real estate (whether in possession or reversion except leasehold estates or estate vested in me as trustee or mortgage) unto and to the use of my executors upon trust to pay rents, profits etc. unto my wife; after her decease I devise: - All farm lands and hereditaments at Great Ellingham, Norfolk which I am entitled under the will of my father John Mendham and a freehold house, garden with adjoining paddock at Sutton Coldfield, Warwickshire now in the occupation of Kempton and which were conveyed to me under the will of my cousin Robert Mendham, deceased unto the said George Evans. - 2 Cottages at Sutton Coldfield in the occupation of Weston and also a paddock at Sutton Coldfield in the occupation of Wright which were also conveyed to me by the will of my cousin Robert Mendham, deceased and a freehold house situate at Tooting, Surrey unto the use of my executors upon trust to pay profits, income etc. unto Louisa the wife of Jesses Henry Newington of Tenterden, Kent for her independent use, and after her decease upon trust to re-convey the said property as Louisa shall appoint. - Freehouse cottage and warehouse at Upper Thomas Street [Surrey] now in the occupation of Adams & Co. unto and to the use of my cousin Alfred Mendham. - Freehold house at Richmond, Surrey unto and to the use of my cousin Edward Mendham. - Freehold houses, cottages, gardens, land and hereditaments in Clophill, Beds to the use of my cousin Edward Pilcher Mendham, if deceased in my lifetime then to the use of my executors upon trust to pay rents, profits etc. to widow of said Edward during her life and after to his children (subject to said annuity of £25 to my mother). - All personal estate including leasehold estates unto executors upon trust to pay income, profits etc. unto wife during her life, and after her decease I bequest: - Leasehold messuages in Lisson Grove North formerly Union Place and also Little Union Place, Middlesex unto Susan Neales and Eliza Neales, spinsters, the daughters of William Neales of St. Bartholomew's near Sandwich. - All shares in Union Fire Office, Birmingham unto Charlotte Goodhall, widow. - 5 shares in the Union Fire Office, London standing in my name as executor of my father unto Catherine the wife of John Raggett Urwin of Brixton Road, Surrey. - 18 shares in the Bank of Australia unto executors upon trust to pay interest, income etc. to my mother for her life, and after her decease unto Anna, wife of said James Phillips. - 5 shares in Margate Pier unto Mary Ann the wife of Mr. Edward Crouch of Clophill. - £1600 consolidated £3 per cent annuities now standing under the will of my father which I am entitled expectant in the manner following: £200 stock to Mary Ann Crouch; £600 stock to Church Missionary Society; £100 stock to Bedford Infirmary; £100 stock to British & Foreign Bible Society; £100 stock to the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge; £200 stock to the Minister and Churchwardens of the Parish of Clophill (for the upkeep and maintenance of the Church); £50 stock to the Poor Pious Society; £60 to the Wanstead Orphan Asylum; £100 stock to George Evans and £100 stock to James Phillips. - £[9]00 pounds bank stock which I am entitled under the will of my father to my cousins Richard Pilcher, Susan Pilcher and Mary Pilcher. - Residue of personal and real estates unto my executors upon trust to demise to any persons under 21 years of age for a term no longer then 21 years to take effect in possession at a rack rent. - All estates vested in me at the time of my decease as trustee or mortgagee unto my executors upon trust to include with my personal estate. - Various conditions stated concerning the power and appointment of trustees. - Signed by R.W. Jennings and W.G. Jennings of London. - Probate granted to George Evans and James Phillips, the executors on the 12th Jul 1869… 'sworn under £14,000'.
