Title
Deposition: Humphrey Blackwall, Litton (Derby), husbandman. 16 May 1678.
Offered mare for sale at Smithfield. Jn.Taylor, bargaining over price, asked to ride her a stop, and rode away. Later H.B. found sale of mare in Dunstable Toll Book (v.9a.), and found her in posession of Wm.Betham. The Informacon of Humphrey Blackwall of Litton in the County of Derbye Husbandman taken upon Oath before Sr Francis Wingate Knt one of his Maties Justices of the peace for the said County of Bedford the 16th day of May Anno dni 1678 This Informt sayth that on fryday last being the 10th day of May instant he was in Smithfeild Markett with a Mare there to sell and that one John Taylour came and asked price of the said Mare, and after some discourse had betweene them about the Mare and the price of her, the said John Taylour bid him three pounds & halfe a Crowne, who told him hee would not take it, but the said John Taylour laid sixpence into this Informts hands and desired he might ride her a step or two, which he suffered him to doe, And that the said John Taylour rid away with the said Mare being a Dun Mare with a Starre and Shorne Mane; And this Infomt sayth that he comeing to Dunstable on Sunday morneing last being the day after Dunstable Faire he searched the Toll books, where he found the said Hare entered and sold by the said John Taylour to one William Bettham of Abbots Aston in the County of Bucks for fourty shillings price, and that one Timothy Bayley of Ampthill in this County of Bedford was there entered as voucher for the said John Taylour; And this Informt sayth that he went to Abbotts Aston and there found his Mare in the possession of the said William Botham; And further this Informt sayth not.
