    Deposition: Robert Butt, Wootton. 1 September 1677. With dog, met Mary Freelone and 2 children of Wm.Copeland. Boy Jn.Copeland was very well the whole time. The Examination of Robert Butt of Wootton in the County aforesaid Jun. taken the first daie of September Anno Dm 1677 The Examinant sayeth that on the twentyforth of August last past he cam over Rouse Wood stile into the Wood Clousse in the parrish of Wootton in the county aforesaid and afterwards his dogg Jumped over the Stile after him soe the dogg passed by Mary Freelove widd beinge then there & allsoe by John Copeland sonne of William Copeland of Ampthill Butcher But for any Runinge awaie of the Boy or cryinge out of him hee doth denie And hee further Confesseth that hee asked whose too Children they were as hee sawe there & the said Mary Freelove answered they were Willm Copelands & the said Mary Freelove said the Boy was afraid & hee Answered againe good Boy bee not afraid & then thesaid Mary Freelove profered him som Nutts But hee Refused to Receive them & all that Time the said John Copeland was with them and very well as far as hee knoweth & then afterwards hee sett them into the pathwaie to Marston feild called Pillinge Hill And further sayeth not Tho Snagge
