Depositions: Henry Cooper, Flitton, lab. 7 December 1677. Found boy Jn. Harper with goods from shop of Jn. Carter, and shop broken open John Carter, Clophill. Shop broken open; goods from it found on Jn. Harper. John Harper, Cransley, lab. Confesses theft. The Informacon of Henry Cooper of Flitton in this County labourer taken upon oath this 7th day of December (77) before mee Wm Daniel Esq one of his Maties Justices of Peace for this County against John Harper late of Cransley in the County of Northton Labourer, as followeth This Informt being duly sworne saith that yesterday the 6th day of this instant December about 3 of the clocke in the morning going by John Carters Shop in Flitton he heard one cough, and goeing nearer he found a boy who goes by the name of John Harper coming out of a barne (neare the said shop) with a bag in his hand, this Informt suspecting the boy to be a rogue seised upon him & searching the said bag found therein 3 tin tobacco boxes, 2 knives, a parcell of tobacco & a parcell of farthings, And whilst this Informt went to see whether the shop was broken open the said Harper slipt away so that he lost him in the darke, But this Informt found a hole made in the wall of a Stable adjoyning to the Shop which this Informt thinks the said Harper crept through, & also found the doore of the Shop next the stable open, which used to be boulted or pinn'd on the inside, & further saith not The Informacon of John Carter of Clophill in this County Grocer taken upon oath this seventh of December (77) before me Wm Daniel Esq agt John Harper & c. This Informt saith that having notice on the 6th instant that his shop att Flitton had bin broken open the night before, he went & found the back doore of his said shop open which used to be boulted with two iron boults on the inside, & also two holes broken in the wall neare against the said boults, through which this Informt thinks that he entred the shop put in his arme & shott the said boults. And this Informt examining his shop found some things misplaced but missed nothing untill the bag was brought him which the said Henry Cooper had found about the said Harper in which was two tin tobacco boxes, 4 knives, a parcell of farthings to the value of about two shillings, & a parcell of tobacco all which this Informt verily believes to be his owne goods & feloniously taken out of his said shop at the time aforesaid & further saith not The Examinacon of John Harper late of Cransley in the County of Northampton Labourer taken at the time aforesaid before me Wm Daniel Esq & c. This Examint being examined how he came by those things (above mentioned) in the bag taken from him by Henry Cooper aforesaid, He answered he had them in the said John Carters shop, & that he broke into the said shop & tooke them out of the same that night the said Henry Cooper found him there & the things about him.
