  • Title
    Deposition: Roger Jenkins, Chalgrave, labourer. Denies knowing how sheep came into his orchard. The examination of Roger [Jenkins] labourer of the towne of Chalgrave in the County aforesd taken before me Wm Duncombe one of his Maties Justices of the peace in the County aforesd this 25 December 1677 This examinate saith that he saw about a month since an alone sheep in his orchard very often that he did enquire of Henry Smith of the same parish if any of his drovers had lost a sheep who answered not that he knew of. That his Orchard was lett to John Gurney of Hockliff Butcher & therefore he did not enquire after the sheep any more but did suspect it a drove sheep. Dissownes to know anything att all of it either of its stay or going away yet saith he was twenty miles off when it was gone from his orchard, and being asked how many days before he went he saw the sheep sais he knows nothing att all of that, but is assurd he saw it not 3 or 4 days before ne went & being asked how he knew it was then lost in his absence & not before says that he was confident it was there the day before he went to gather setts att Sanbridge & farther saith not W Duncombe
