    Deposition: William Smythes, Bedford, gentleman 7 November 1675. The goods found were embezzled by his son from his master Lewis Higgins. wifeS. paid L.H. £80 in satisfaction. The examination of William Smythes of the towne of Bedford gentl brought before me William Beckett major upon suspition of taken the goods of Thomas Newman of St Neots in the county of Hunt: draper the eleventh day of October Ao Dm 1675 This examint saieth that the goods now found in his custody and seized by the constables he received at the towne of Bedford from his sonn William Smythes the younger of St Neots abovesaid grocer above a yeare and halfe agone: And his said sonn then told this examinant that hee imbezelled them from his master Lewis Higgins of London tally-man and that his said master formerly taxed the said William Smythes the yonger for imbezelling the said goods: and made complaint thereof to this examinant: and this examinant saieth that hee this examint did pay to the said Higgins his said sonns master fowerscore pounds in satisfaction for the said imbezelment and that thereupon the said Higgins did release his said sonn upon all accompts and afterwards his said sonn brought the said goods to this examint and further saieth not.
