    Deposition: George Harris, Little Gransden, Cambs. servant. 1675 Being 'overtaken in drincke' hired J. Gale for 2d. to accompany him to Brumham. Near the windmill he lay down and slept. Suspects Gale of stealing coat and money while he slept. Gale confessed and returned coat. The informacon of George Harris of Gransden parva in the county of Cambridge servant to William Lake of the said towne husbandman taken upon his oath 23 May 1675 This informant saith that on Saturday the two and twentieth day of this instant May Ao Dni 1675 hee this informant beeing at Bedford about nine of the clocke at night and sensible that hee was overtaken in drincke which hee had gott in Bedford in severall places hee cannot give an accompte of being a stranger their desired one John Gale of Bedford plaisterer whom hee hired for 2d to goe alonge with him this informant and to shewe him the way to Brumham in the said county of Bedford and as they were goeing together hee this informant about the windmill on this side Brumham beeing weayr lay downe upon the ground and fell asleepe where hee slept as hee doth beeleive about three howers and when hee awaked hee found his coate which lay under him taken away from him and the bottom of his pockett cutt out and his purse taken out of his pockett soe cutt with two and twentie shillinges in his purse and his purse putt into his other pockett but his two and twenty shillinges with his said coate stollen away from him and haveing the said John Gale (being none other in his company) in suspicon for comitting the said fellony for that the said Gale was gone when hee this informant awaked out of his said sleepe came this morneing to Bedford to the said Gale to enquire for his said coate and moneyes which hee suspected the said Gale to have stollen from him this informant as aforesaid & thereupon the said Gale did deliver unto him this informant his said coate and did tell this informant that hee the said Gale had this informants two and twenty shillings but had paid eighteen pence part thereof to Joane Deane whoe keepes an Alehouse in St Peters parish in Bedford aforesaid which hee was indebted to her and left the rest of the said two and twentye shillinges with he the said Joane Deane to lay upp for him the said John Gale And further saith not Signum Georgii Harris Taken and acknowledged The day and yeare aforesaid beefore mee Wm Foster
