West, Edwife Simme , Constables. 15 May 1670 1670 Having notice of a conventicle at the house of John Fenne in Bedford, they found the following there:- Nehemiah Cox, cordwainer 'who was speaker or teacher at the said Conventicle' Sam Fenne, haberdasher of hats John Fenne, haberdasher of hats Mary Tilney widow Sam. Henceman, grocer Josias Ruffhead, cordwainer Thomas Honylove, cordwainer Finch Bartrum, cordwainer John Spencer, chandler & wife Sarah Sam. Halcrofte, cordwainer John Henceman, heelmaker Thomas Bowsekill, tobacco pipe maker Thomas Sewell, tanner Paul Gale, husbandman William Man, maltster Anns, wife of William Swinshead, gardener William Morton, baker Richard Allin, collarmaker Susan Brumhall, widow John Bardolfe, maltster Eliz. Rich, wife of Dan. Rich, tanner Joan, wife of Edwife Coventon, grocer Mary Odell, spinster Joan, wife of Robt. Berry, butcher Mary, wife of William Joy, baker Anne, wife of Edwife Isaac, blacksmith All above of Bedford Margaret, wife of William Mason of Ravensden, husbandman (erased: John Gale, Bedford, tailor Bed, Bedford, tailor) John Bartrum, Bedford, tailor -- Nehemiah Cox then said "That the Church of England as it now stands is an anti-Christian church and that this meeting at which they were now taken is the way of Christ and according to the word of God" Endorsed: Averment by Fra. Feckman, Robt. West, Edwife Simms constables that Robt. Fareman constable and James Goads churchwarden, on notice of the conventicle have refused to do their duties. Sunday 15 May 1670 Francis Feckman Robert West Edward Simmes, one of the constables of the sd towne And evry of them doe make oath that they these Informants Francis Feckman & Robt West haveing notice of an Assembly conventicle or meeteing under colour or pretence of exercise of Religion in other manner then according to the Liturgy or practise of the Church of England at the House of John Fenne of Bedford and they thereupon together with the sd Edward Simms by warrant from Mr Foster one of his Majesties Justices of the peace in the said towne imediately repaireing to the said House of the said John Fenne did then finde assembled at the said House Nehemiah Cox of the said Towne of Bedford, cordwinder Who was speaker or teacher at the said Conventicle And that there were present at the said Conventicle Samuell Fenne of the said Towne, haberdasher of hats John Fenne of the same Towne, haberdasher of hats Mary Tilney of the same Towne, widdowe Samuell Henceman of the said Towne, grocer Josias Ruffhead of the said Towne, cordwinder Thomas Honylove of the said Towne, cordwinder Finch Bartram of the said Towne, cordwinder John Spencer of the said Towne, chandler, and Sarah his wife Samuell Halcrofte of the said Towne, cordwinder John Henceman of the said Towne, heelemaker Thomas Bowsekill of the said Towne, tobacchoe pipe maker Thomas Sewell of the said Towne, tanner Paul Gale of the said Towne, husbandman Wm Man of the said Towne, maulster Anne the wife of Wm Swinshead, gardiner Wm Morton of the said Towne, baker Richard Allin of the said Towne, collermaker Susanna Bramhall of the said Towne, widdowe John Bardolfe of the said Towne, malster Elizabeth Rich the wife of Daniel Rich of the said Towne, tanner Joane the wife of Edward Coventon of the said Towne, grocer Mary Odell of the said Towne, spinster Joane the wife of Robert Berry of the said Towne, butcher Mary the wife of Wm Joy of the said Towne, baker Anne the wife of Edward Isaac of the said Towne, blacksmith Margarett the wife of Wm Mason of Ravensden, husbandman and John Bartram of the said Towne, taylor And every of them subjects of this statute being above the age of sixteen yeares. And the said Nehemiah Cox did averre and say That the Church of England as it now stands is an anti-Christian church and that this meeteing at which they were now taken is the way of Christ and according to the word of God. Robert West Francis Feckman Thomas Battison Signum de Jonathan Pulford [Note on back dated Monday May 16 (70)] Francis Feckman, Robert West, & Edwrads Simms constable on their oath do aver that Robert Fareman constable & James Goads Churchward[en] upon information & notice of a conventicle from the said informts have refused to do their Duty according to the Act in yr 22 of K Ch the 2d.
