  • Scope and Content
John Morris was the owner of the Red Lion at Dunstable, where Mrs Charlotte Marshall was the licenced victualler, assisted by a manager, Miss Elizabeth Kent. John Morris died in the 1850's, and his estate was handled by trustees, Morris Ashby and Skidmore Assby William Wells Kilpin. It seems that Charlotte took over the Red Lion following the death of her husband, William, in 1854. (See SF16/2). In addition to the tenancy of the Red Lion, the Marshalls rented some land in Houghton Regis. We believe the land was owned by Lord Strafford, whose agent was Edward Partington. Following Charlotte Marshall's death, James Jardine took over the licence of the Red Lion. His agent was Mr Derbyshire. Thomas Greene is one of the executors of Charlotte Marshall. Mrs Marshall died in debt, and it took some while for her estate to be settled.
