Title
Agreement for maintaing Silsoe workhouse:
(i) Hadley Cox, vicar of Flitton with Silsoe;
Matt. Caton, chapel-warden;
Russell Finney & Jn. Porter, overseers for Silsoe;
(ii) Wright Titmus of Stevenage, yeo.
Titmus will provide for the poor of Silsoe with a
wholesome and sufficient diet of all sorts with a
proper quantity of good small beer, and decent and
necessary apparel; so that they shall be in no ways
chargeable to the hamlet. Anyone not in the workhouse
who breaks a limb, or catches an infectious distemper
(smallpox, venereal disease, scald head, the itch) should
be kept until recovered at a convenient palce provided
by the parish, and not brought into the workhouse until
so recovered; when, if unable to support themselves,
they may be so brought in. If the workhouse is not large
enough to contain all the poor, the parish shall provide one
or more house or houses. The parish will pay Titmus 95 p.a.
for 3 yrs., but they may discontinue Titmus as manager of
the poor at the end of 1 yr., on paying him 5. Titmus
will supply the poor with beds, bedding and other necessary
furniture, and provide those who can work with necessary
implements and materials. A valuation is to be made of
the furniture and apparel (excluding that of such of the
poor as are in the gift and charity of the Marchioness de
Grey). At the end of the term the parish may purchase at
a valuation the fruniture installed by Titmus for not more
than 31 10s. Anyone catching an infectious distemper
(other than those above) and removing with household goods
into the workhouse may take such goods out again on recovery.
Joint efforts shall be made to secure a runaway, but if he
cannot be recovered his family shall be cared for as above.
