- Scope and Contenttopics dealt with including the following: - tenders for a Fire Tender; - discussion on a suitable location for the storage of Auxiliary Fire Service appliances, no decision being reached; - discussion of suitable site for the building of a new Fire Station, the existing premises in Mill Street being considered too small; resolved that Borough Engineer and Chief Fire Officer to investigate the following sites: St.Cuthbert's Square and Old Rectory; The Laundry, Goldington Road; and The Drill Ground, Newnham Avenue; - repair of the roof of 36 Mill Street; - approval of suggestion of Chief Fire Officer to charge 10/- to businesses in receipt of a Fire Protection lecture or demonstration; - sending of a representative to British Fire Week; - Chief Fire Officer's statement that he would meet with his counterparts from Luton, Letchworth and Northampton to draft proposals for submission to Technical Sub-Committee of Conference of Fire Authorities on mutual aid; - suggested arrangements between the Borough and Rural District Council re paying for Brigade under Bedford Rural District Council Protection Agreement; - arrangement for temporary firemen to cover for permanent firemen during their six weeks of annual leave; - purchase of a second-hand lorry to train drivers of Auxiliary Fire Service; - revision of scheme for Auxiliary Fire Service; - participation of AFS members in National Service Rally; - authorisation of ARP and RAF exercises; - tentative agreement for telephonic installations at Mill Street Fire Station and Auxiliary Fire Stations; - selection of premises to be action stations as follows: Fox & Hounds PH, Goldington Road; 2 Pemberley Avenue; Angel Hotel Garage, Haynes Road; St.John's Place; Queen's Engineering Works; and Clarendon Street; - appointment of additional Auxiliary fireman and claim for Home Office grant; - decision not to fence off of Newnham Drill Ground to prevent trespass andconsideration of erection of a building at the Drill Ground for storage of pumps etc; necessity of appointing of one or two more whole-time professional firemen.
