'Shephoo manor: a true copy of the decree...touching the Earl of Kent and the minister & inhabitants of Over Gravenhurst' (appears to be a corrected draft). (For the inquisition of 9 Jan. 1612/13 see P 17/25/2 and ABE 2,I,p.101). Order & decree made at Bedford by Sir Jn. Crofts, Sir Fra. Ventris, Sir (Ed.?) Conquest, Chris. Wyvell, Chancellor to the Bishop of Lincoln, Thos. Archer, B.D., Fra. Crawley esq., by virtue of commission of 23 Nov. 1612 under the act of 1601: recites inquisition at Ampthill 9 Jan. 1612/13 (gives jurors' names): that manor of Shephoo was anciently given to maintain a minister or curate at Over Gravenhurst; and was for 34 years in the possession of the Earl of Kent. While there appeared some grounds for thinking that the Earl genuinely purchased it, nevertheless he now wished to restore it, & to deliver all writings to the feoffees. He himself, his bro. Chas., & his neph. Sir Hen., & Anth. Grey, clerk, will convey their interest to listed trustees (see L 24/137). It is also agreed that no arrears are to be claimed, & that whereas the Earl has let the manor to Wm. Mathewe @ 23 p.a. with 18 yrs. to come, the trustees shall make a new lease to Matthewe @ 30 p.a. The trustees shall provide a chest with 4 locks, & a fair paper book, & one or more of them shall be appointed to write therein the particulars, to be kept in the chest in Over Gravenhurst chapel; & 2 inhabitants shall be chosen annually in Easter week to manage the rents. No future lease shall be for more than 12 yrs. The incumbent is to have half the income, unless not licensed or non-resident, in which case only 3; the rest for repairs.
