Scope and Content
Concerning dispute between the King and the inhabitants
of Gravenhurst over the chapel and its lands and tenements,
worth 3 p.a., and tithes at Gravenhurst;
it was deposed that the chapel is a free chapel of ease
and the lands belong to it; part of the rents used
to pay the minister, who would otherwise be without
sufficient living; and part 'in and about suche comon
charge as the inhabitants for the tyme being thought
mete and convenient'. The chapel of ease was established
by ancient grant to save the inhabitants the journey to
Shillington, distant 'one mile and more and divers brokes
of water betwixt the same village and the parishe church
wiche by reason of lande fluddes dothe at manie tymes ryse
so great that the inhabitants cannot passe without daunger
of drownyng'. The incumbent of the church is charged with
the cure of souls from time out of memory, and the
continuance of the chapel was confirmed by letters patent
of Henry VIII and by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The
vicar of Shillington does not now administer the sacrament
etc. to the inhabitants of Gravenhurst.
The endowments etc. are to be retained for the use of the
chapel.
