    Correspondence: Letter to Earl de Grey from John Bower, Smeathalls, agent to Earl de Grey to April 1844: enclosing Ayrton's and Parker's valuation of Craven estates. Has seen Mr. Kempson vicar of Long Preston and seen church is in very dilapidated state, which may have arisen from vicars' non-residence for nearly 30 years, or from his disputes with parishoners over tithes. Earl de Grey is said to be liable for repair of part of chancel over his pew. Too many dissenters to allow favourable result of rate to repair and repew the nave.
