  • Scope and Content
The Act to encourage the formation of Friendly Societies (33 Geo III, c 54, 1792 - 3) provided that their rules were to be confirmed by Quarter Sessions, a duplicate being retained by the Clerk of the Peace. By an Act of 10 Geo IV c 56 (1829) the rules were to be certified by a barrister, who in 1846 (9 and 10 Vict. c 27) was appointed Registrar of Friendly Societies and all rules enrolled by the Clerk of the Peace were transferred to his custody. The provisions of these (and other Acts) were transferred to Loan Societies, in 1835, and to Benefit Building Societies in 1836 (5 and 6 Wm IV c 23 and 6 & 7 Wm IV c 32). With regard to Freemasons they were exempted from the provisions of the Act of 39 Geo III c 79 (1798 -1799) against unlawful societies, provided that certificates giving place and time of meetings and names and descriptions of all their members, were deposited annually with the Clerk of the Peace. This obligation was repealed by the Criminal Law Act, 1967.
