Two copies (in different hands) of a Quarter Sessions order, Hertfordshire, for a surveryor's rate of 4d in the pound before Thomas Herbert Noyes esq, Sir Richard Chase, Thomas Plumer Byde esq. Surveyors: Carolus Nicholls Field, William Wiltshire junr, Nathanial Saunders, William Law. Complaint by Carolus Nicholls Field, one of the surveyors of the highways for Hitchin, that the highways, bridges, streets, etc are in such a bad state they can't be repaired without the financial help of the court, and he requests a rate assessment of 4d in the pound on all owners and occupiers in Hitchin. The court orders the churchwardens, surveyors of the highways and others usually present at the making of parish rates to give notice in the parish church on the Sunday before they hold their usual meeting, and the surveyor to collect the rates. Dated 30 April 1764. Signed "Thorowgood." To one copy has been added "Aprill 30th 1764 - Paid to Mr Throwgood, Clerk of the Peace, for a copy of the order 5s, the Cryer of the Court 4d = 5s 4d"
