Letter from Joshua Maldon to Thomas Flint Field, cheesemonger, of Newgate St, London. Has met Mr Brown again but they have not yet reached agreement on the exchange. On Field's behalf, has offered South Wood close, Great Wood close, the driftway from Little and Great Wood close, Buckle Grove, Edens Piece in Pulloxhill - total: 14ac 2r 18p. Proposes having from Lady Lucas: Vetchy close and Kitchin End close on the south of Field's house, total 6ac 2r 24p. Standing hard for 14 ac of Kitchen End close which will be valuable to Field's farm. If Mr Brown calls, feign ignorance of the business because 1 acre of that land is worth 100 to Field's farm; "keep that between us and don't let Mr Edwards hear how it's going on". In Field's place he'd insist on having the Higham land that was legally exchanged because the exchange was in Field's favour to nearly 200. Messrs Wilsher and Brown will prove Field's right to the bargain, and he believes Wilsher will lose his stewardship on this account and will therefore do anything - as far as is right - to save Field. Believes procedings against Field's mother have been stopped and the accounts of sale paid, but hopes the crops will bring as much as will pay everyone 20 shillings in the pound. 28 August 1819 Biggleswade.
