  • Title
Letter This letter refers to the request by Mr Maule, the new Rector of Ampthill, for the tenancy of a house at Ampthill at present occupied by Mr Chapman, the curate, and formerly part of Mr Fisher's "Folly" and enquires whether the Duke would spend money to enlarge and improve the house. Mr Bennett puts the arguments for an against the proposal including the question of whether the Bishop would find this acceptable or whether he would want a new Rectory built - in which case would the Duke be prepared to sell the land without pledging himself in any other way. Mr Maule is the son of the Tory election agent for Huntingdon and consequently "may not be the sort of man the Duke may like".
