Letter Letter regarding Mr Burness' shed which he wants enlarged and open at one end. The Duke sees no reason why it should be enlarged and will not sanction it. The Duke feels that such applications should be put in writing as Mr Burness has on previous occasions, decided that he wanted something quite different from his original request once the work is in progress. The Duke has decided that 13 is the proper number of race-horses to be included in the tax returns and the Government Surveyors are satisfied. The Newmarket Custom now sanctions it as it is the practice of Lord Exeter and Colonel Peel - both authorities in the matter. The Duke is satisfied that even if the tax returns prove to be incorrect there was no intention to defraud.
