Letter Reads- Mr Bennett has been in consultation with Mr Canning who will negotiate on behalf of the Duke and the tenants with Mr Saunders on behalf of the Bletchley Railway Company. Mr Canning thinks that Mr Bennett's estimate for building land in Bedford compared with what they had obtained for Lord Exeter at Stamford and others. He discusses this at length. Mr Green has offered the railway company his river field, or as much of it as they require, at 200 an acre, "a mighty generous thought on his part but no reason why we should follow his patriotic example". Anyway, the railway line cannot get to Mr Green's river field without passing through the Duke's and Major Gotobed's land. Mr Bennett writes at some length about his objections to a steam engine recommended by Mr Hacker. Lord Normanby wanted a steward but the estate is small with no prospect of advancement and "a better sort of bailiff" is what Lord Normanby should have. A good man should be permitted to undertake other business or allowed to occupy a good farm to augment his salary. Suggest that this would be an excellent opportunity for a young man to make connections.
