    Letter Reads- Returns to Mr Haedy a letter about a well. He has filled in "the blanks" and altered the pump to well tackle "for, in exposes situations such as this, boys and idle people are continuously putting in stones, which wear out the buckets in a short time "advises getting control of the well so that it can be enclosed and protected". Mr Smith of Steppingley has asked for his agreement to be cancelled so that he may quit at Michaelmas. He has no cause for dissatisfaction or discontent with his landlord but, with the death of Mr Garnett(whose illegitimate son he is supposed to be)he thinks the most "provident and straightforward course" is for him to quit the farm. Mr Bennett advised him not to do anything in a hurry. Describes him as a good farmer and a favourite with his neighbours. Discusses proposals for a joint visit to Mr Hodges to get information about drain pipe kilns.
