Letter Mr Bennett writes about subscriptions to Aspley Church which are due and says it should be paid in town. Mr Haedy probably has a record of the amount due - 150 - should pay it and charge the Duke's account. Mr Bennett encloses a letter from a man called Ireland who wants to obtain the means to enable his son to emigrate - wants him sent out at the expense of the Parish. Bennett outlines the difficulty of this - There is great difficulty as to settlement - The son never gained one by service and the father never made one until the son was married and emancipated. It therefore goes back to the grandfather's settlement of which the father has no knowledge. The son and his family are therefore only casual paupers of Eversholt and it might be more expense to find out his settlement and to remove him to it than "send him over the water, which is the best place for him". Bennett has suggested to Mr Ireland a compromise whereby someone would pay half if the Parish would pay the other half. He points out that there would be considerable risk and he does not know who would undertake it unless the Duke would be kind enough to do so. He then writes about the purchase of a steam engine for such purposes as thrashing and chaff cutting as well as working a circular saw. Bennett thinks that Masseys would be able to provide a satisfactory engine for their estimate. The final part of this letter concerns a possible application by the electors of Shefford regarding registration expenses for 1841. Following the last election, a meeting of electors took place at the Swan. Mr Whitbread was appointing Chairman and Lord Charles Russell stated that as his connection with the County had now ceased, the registration at his own cost and risk would cease. Mr Bennett attended this meeting in his capacity of an elector and not as a steward to the Duke of Bedford.
