- TitleLetter Reads- Yorke doesn't want to give written undertaking to leave Michaelmas 1843. I told him it was only for him to look round, and that I would not treat for this year till he gave me the letter. I also saw Mrs. Allen, and showed her that she would get no advantage by 1 year. Difference to her is this: at her entry Ossory's agent charged her husband for hay etc.; is she leaves now the custom of the country will allow her to be paid at the same rate; whereas if she hires from the Duke, she must give up that advantage & receive only the value to consume at home, or what is called the "spending price", which is usually taken at 1/3 less than market price when taken away. To prevent the perpetuation of an evil system we have always in such cases paid the difference between the spending price & market value to the outgoing tenant; "the new tenant then commences according to our general plan. This I did with Col. Macqueen's tenants when we changed them on getting possession. She had an idea that if she hired for 1 year they might get on again; out of question; dilapidated buildings; her farm & 2 adjacent to make 2 farms.
