- TitleLetter Reads- Possibility of rebuilding malting when this one worn out. Burness could see the plan & system at Bedford, as Higgins' malting was build entirely by the advice of Whitbread & Ch---- who always when at Southill, comes to Bedford to inspect Higgins' concerns. Told Duke what we propose about new drain tile people: to pay expenses of man to bring machine to try on our Crawley clay; if it works, to buy. Duke also approves of pr. of horses or mules instead of grey teams; mules more durable, but horses more manageable, in single carts; Duke said horses. I think the farmers who made up their minds for a change in the corn law think Peel's scale will make little difference. It is a gross delusion to permit the consumer to think it will be any benefit either as cheap loaf or in helping continental trade. "No surrender" men alarmed, & "free traders" laugh. I myself did not think much of Peel's speech; expect it will be put off till a measure of greater degree.
