Letter Reads- Duke spoke about park drains. Lord Wriothesley & the almshouses at Chenies. It we could get into a plan to induce the young men to emigrate, the want of means would be easily got over, because parishes are enabled to raise money on security of the rates for this purpose to be paid off in 5 years (under direction of Poor Law commissioners: 4 & 5 William IV c.76, sec.62); and when a landowner has the whole parish, or when different landowners can agree to assist beyond the sum raised by the occupiers, relief to any extent might be had; the great difficulty to get over would then only be the unwillingness to start. As to fitness for emigrating, good health & willi mind required. Milton Bryan has been wonderfully improved by the joint endeavours of the occupiers & Sir Robert & Misses Inglis; the accounts from the first lot are so encouraging that they sent another large family last spring. Great good was done at Oakley 9-10 years ago by sending 3-4 large families.
