Letter from Thomas Churchman at Dry Drayton to Robert Butcher Reads- I don't wish to meddle too much in the affair of Mr Gifford and the farm, but since you want my opinion, I would say he would make a good tennent if he didn't already have estate of his own in town, if you see my meaning. The neighbourhood and I am at a loss to know why you offered him the farm. Had you known what dung, timber, and boards have been conveyed from My Lord Duke's effects to their own (Giffords land in the parish already) during the last 20 years I am sure you wouldn't have offered him the farm. Say in your letter, though, that he may enjoy all the privileges that Mr Dare had, and those were too many. Be careful how you fix a rent with him. I personally think the farm should have been granted to my Lord Duke, not Gifford. About Mr Thurleburns affair. I think Mr. Gifford is about the business himself. They keep the rent a secret I know not why. I was at Mr Lindley's farm at Lolworth (Cambs) the other day to be sold adjoyning to Mr. Lord's estate - a very complete farm of 72 a. arable, 20 a. pasture and 11 a. 3 r. meadow and a good complete homestall. further details about the farm. PS Have you given any of the tennants permission to grub up any large lime trees. I want to know because there are some large lime trees Dugg up and they take the tops and bottoms off as they doe the pollards. The purchase of Lolworth farm about 930.
