Title
RECORDS OF NATIONAL FARMERS UNION. The National Farmers Union (NFU) was established in 1908 (see Lord Ernle's English Farming Past & Present (1961 Edition) p.409). It has not been possible to trace precisely when a local branch was first established in Bedfordshire but both the Beds. & Hunts. County branch and the Bedford branch seem to have been formed in about 1912. Bedford branch activities were reported in the Bedfordshire Times in 1923. The first surviving minute book, however, does not begin until 1935.
Between 1928 & 1931 the Bedfordshire & Huntingdonshire Branch of the NFU & The NFU Mutual Insurance Society were based at 72 High Street, Bedford. The Secretary of the Branch and the County Agent of the Insurance Company was B.Goodman. Meetings were held at 72 High Street until 10 January 1955 when they were held at their new offices at 57 Goldington Road. At some time after 1976 the NFU moved from 57 to 55 Goldington Road.
