MOGERHANGER PARK Photographs of Humphrey Repton's Red Book for "Mogenhanger in Bedfordshire, a Seat of Godfrey Thornton Esqr.", made between 28th May and August 1792. Photographs made c.1986 by National Monuments Record, negative numbers BB 86/26. P.26 Approach continued Reads - The preceeding sketch will describe the appearance of the Lodge and road leading to it as marked upon the map at G. instead of the dead hedge which is annually raised. I should advise a neat post and rail to protect the corn. The Lodge (in which I have copied Mr.Soanes outline) I propose to place in front of a few trees that will immediately form a background, and join with the plantation H and K to conceal the lodge from the park. The plantation H is necessary to hide some mean looking buildings, and to do away the remembrance of a lane too nearly parallel with the line of Approach, this lane will still be the road to the Farm. The Approach in one easy line proceeds to the house, and in its progress has a very interesting view towards the woods &c. The farmhouse is at present too important in its appearance for the mansion, indeed it is the principal object of the two; and I think the best way to remedy this defect, without planting out the view from its windows, will be to cover the walls with vines or pear trees, which will serve to make it more picturesque, and also render it more subordinate in the general scenery.
