- Admin/biog historyThis Committee was set up in 1948 under the Children Act 1948. Descriptions given of the Committee's functions have varied, but the description in the Yearbook for 1965/6 was: 1. To be the Committee required to be appointed by the Council under Section 39 of the Children Act 1948 2. To exercise and perform all the powers and duties of the Council under: - The Children Acts 1948 and 1958; - The Children & Young Persons Acts 1933 to 1963 (excluding Part II of the 1933 Act and Part II of the 1963 Act); - The Adoption Acts 1958 and 1960 - The Matrimonial Proceedings (Magistrates Court) Act 1960; - so much of the Mental Health Act 1959 as relates to the functions of Children Authorities and any other enactment which relates to children and is not expressly made the responsibility of another Committee Some of the work done by the Care of Children Committee had been performed, before 1948, by the Public Assistance Committee [PA] This Committee ceased on the setting up of the Social Services Committee in 1970 [SS]
