A Note on Toddington Schools
Toddington National School (later Public Elementary National, VCCP, St George’s CofE VCCP, St George of England VC Lower, St Georges’s VC Lower) and Toddington National Infants (Public Elementary National Infants) began in 1854.
These two schools were amalgamated in 1926.
The Wesleyan School also opened in 1854. It became Toddington Public Elementary Wesleyan in 1903 and closed in 1909 when pupils and headmaster transferred to the new Council School, which opened in 1910. The Council School later became Toddington County Primary School then Toddington County Secondary Modern (Jan 1947-Apr 1963), Parkfields County Secondary (Apr 1963-1977) and Parkfields Middle (1977-). Note that a purpose built Middle School block for 150 children was provided on the Parkfields site in 1971, and a Hearing Impaired Unit in September, 1974. Under the approved scheme for Re-organisation of Schools in Bedfordshire the whole Parkfields site was re-organised into a Middle School in 1977.
Chalton Board School opened in 1893. It later became Chalton Council, then Chalton County Primary, then Chalton Lower School.
This collection contains photographs and documents relating to several of these schools but predominately Toddington County schools from 1900 onward.
