  • Title
Photograph of Bedford Midland Station, demolished 1978, taken by Mr Fred Cockman. Alfred Sizer in Bedford Junction box. Note public and railway telephones; correct time by clock; underneath are the printed notices for the week's altered and special train arrangements. On the desk shelf is the train register in which is entered the times of a train being offered by Kempston Road Junction (next to the south) or by Bedford North, and of its clearing his section. As he deals with passenger and goods traffic there are hundreds of entries for the eight hour shift. Note wheels by his foot for taking up slack in the distant signal wires in hot weather, and letting out in cold weather. See also general notice board in background and cooking stove. He has opened the window to signal a train from St. John's box.
