Admin/biog history
Hugh Smyth was born in Edworth in 1818. Hugh Smyth was married twice and with his second wife Ellen he had many children including a son John, born in 1864. This John (1864) was the father of John Reginald Victor (b. 1900, died 1985). Hugh's younger brother, Thomas Smyth, was born in Edworth in 1828. Thomas had at least the following children: Thomas Hugh (bc1871), George E (c1873-1959), Mary Louisa (c1869-1954), Annie Elizabeth (c1874-1966), Edith Clara (c1878-?) and Edward James Smyth, born in Edworth c1879 and James Edward (c1887-?). Edward James married Jessica Bowman of Stotfold and lived at Rook Tree House, Rook Tree Lane, Stotfold. Edward and Jessica had two daughters: Ina Louisa Roberts nee Smyth, born 29 October 1910 died March 2007 in the Hitchin area, and Joan Smyth remained unmarried, born 12 August 1907, died July 2002 in the Hitchin area.
Mrs Ina Roberts and Miss Joan Smyth, deposited 1976 became gift on their deaths.
Archival history
The SM collection was deposited by the late John Reginald Victor Smyth and the SM/E collection by his second cousins, Ina Roberts and Joan Smyth. Both collections were gifted to the archives service on the deaths of the depositors in 1985 and 2007 respectively.
