The Luton and Dunstable was opened on 14 February 1939 and replaced the Bute Hospital (opened on 27 September 1882). The Bute in its turn replaced the Luton Cottage Hospital, which had opened 6 May 1872. The archive deposited covers all three hospitals. Photographs of the Spittlesea Isolation Hospital and Luton Maternity Home, Napier Road are also included. A substantial part of the archive relates to nursing training at the Hospital from the 1940s to the 1970s. A useful set of photographs of maternity nurses in a labour ward in c 1960 is included. A detailed history of the Hospital using the archive and other sources has been published. It is entitled 'Hopitals in Luton and Dunstable: An Illustrated History' by Margaret R Currie SRM, RCNT. It was published in 1982. A copy is available in the searchroom (Classification 151) and is essential reading for anyone using the archive.
