Will (copy) of Fra. West of Hockliffe "I do bequeath unto my loving kinsmen Jos. Cooper of Tebworth, yeoman, and Wm. Grant of Eggington, yeoman, £400 upon this special trust: That they shall with all convenient speed purchase a freehold estate, and that the yearly rents of the estate to be purchased shall be every year distributed among the poor inhabitants of Hockliffe and Chalgrave, the one moiety to Hockliffe and the other moiety to Chalgrave; Only to and for this intent and purpose, for the encouragement of literature and learning: that they, the said poor sort of inhabitants, may be enabled the better therewith to put forth their children to school to learn to read and write; and to clothe such of the said poor children so going to school whose parents are not of ability to clothe them, if there be any surplusage of the profits as far as the same will reach. In case this my gift and charity shall not have that effect within the said parishes as to encourage the said poor inhabitants to suffer poor children to go to school, or if the said poor inhabitants shall misemploy the same, then the said yearly rents shall be yearly given for placing out my poor relations' children either to school or apprentices. And I bequeath to my said kinsmen £10 apiece for their labour and pains. And as either of my said trustees shall depart this life, the surviving trustee shall convey the lands upon two or three other of my neighbouring relations to be by him nominated trustees. I do desire my loving friend Mr. Francis Neale of Ivinghoe, gentleman, to be aiding and assisting of my said trustees." 31 March 1690. pr. 10 November 1690.
