  • Title
Borough of Dunstable, Dunstable Charter Trustees, Dunstable Town Council.
  • Admin/biog history
Dunstable became a Municipal Borough in 1864 and retained Borough status until 30th March 1974 when borough status was removed as part of local government reorganisation. During the period 1974-1985 there was no local administration other than the Charter Trustees, who were councillors of South Beds District Council representing the Dunstable Wards. The Charter Trustees had a role in maintaining continuity and ceremonial functions until such time as a parish or town council was formed. The Town Council was formed in 1985 and assumed responsibility for local services and administration.
  • Scope and Content
The records of Dunstable Cemetery have also been retained by the Town Council, but the Record Office holds microfiche copies of the burial registers and indexes 1861-1987 (ref: Micf 100). A full list of the surviving cemetery records is also available at the Record Office (ref: CRT 130 DUN 38). A few "stray" records of the Borough Council have been transferred to the County Record Office from the offices of Messrs. Benning, Hoare and Drew. For many years Mr. C. S. Benning, a local solicitor and partner in the firm, served the Borough Council as Town Clerk. Details of these records will be found in the Record Office catalogues under the reference BH uncat 256-267.
  • Archival history
Although the Borough Council, the Charter Trustees and Dunstable Town Council were three separate organisations with different responsibilities the deposit of the material with Bedfordshire Archives has generally been by the Town Council and for ease of use it has been decided to keep the three entities under the same reference. Accession 3585, deposit March 1973
