    Regional Survey of Milton Ernest - a project undertaken by Beatrice Gillam as part of her first year course work at Bedford Froebel Training College. The survey is divided into three sections and subdivided as follows; PLACE - position, shape and communications including a postcard of the high street, a photo of a bus at Milton Ernest, copy bus timetables, a photograph of bridge over railway line at Radwell, photograph of river with railway in background; - relief, climate and geology including relief map of parish, photograph of causeway beside road, geological maps of parish, samples of boulder clay and gravel; - natural vegetation and fauna including list of flowers found in parish and dried specimens of flowers including kingcup, lesser celandine, cuckoo flower, groundsel, cowslip, cow parsley, daisy, buttercup, common vetch, herb Robert, white dead nettle, purple dead nettle, garlic mustard, lamb's lettuce, wild strawberry, hop trefoil, bladder campion, wood anemone, dog violet, bugle, chickweed, dove's foot, crane's bill, ground ivy, greater stitchwort, wood sanicle, fumitory, yellow dead nettle, willow, horse chestnut, elm and Lombardy poplar and list of birds seen and heard WORK - development of agriculture including copy of Milton Ernest Enclosure Award map, map of land utilisation in parish in 1927 and 1939; - modern agriculture including photograph of hay drier and dried specimens of half baked, totally baked and ground lucerne; - industries old and new including photograph of Oakley hounds and Kennels FOLK- fluctuations of population; - houses including map showing buildings in the village centre and the materials from which they were constructed and photographs of Home Farm, The Almshouses, thatched cottages, new council houses, modern brick house, Bakery and adjoining cottages, Manor Farm, "a Tudor house" and Vicarage ; - religion in Milton Ernest including photograph of Methodist chapel; - the church including floor plan and photographs of wall piscina and stump of pillar, lych gate and exterior seen from SW, extracts from Parish Magazines and list of incumbents; - the school and education including photograph of school exterior from N;- public affairs including photograph of gas tap in River continued Lane, new water tower and spring in River Lane; - charities; - social life; - traditional legends of Milton Ernest including photograph of alleged grave of Simon Goodin, a hermit who lived in Lawn Wood and was buried just outside it, photograph of entrance to Elm Avenue, haunted by a carriage and four
