    Pocket (Account) Book of Matthew Clay.
  • Admin/biog history
    Matthew Clay had a distinguished career in the military; between 1813-1833 he served in The Third (Scots Fusilier) Regiment of Foot Guards gaining promotion in 1818 to Corporal and again in 1822 to Sergeant. He was present at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and was Sergeant-Major of the Bedfordshire Militia 1833-1852. He died in Bedford on the 5th Jun 1873
  • Scope and Content
    The principal objects for which a soldier was require to be in possession of an account book, was, to secure to the soldier, whilst in the army, a proper settlement of his pay, allowances and clothing, and that the soldier has a record, establishing his claim to any benefits to which he may be entitled under His Majesty's Regulations for granting Pensions, Allowances, and Gratuities, to discharged Soldiers, who have performed good and faithful service. This item was deposited by Pottergate Stamps & Cards, Norwich and has been catalogued alongside a transcription of Clay's monument inscription at Bedford Cemetery that serves as a glowing testament to his distinguished military career.
