  • Scope and Content
Preface "Herein are represented delineations of all inscriptions and heraldic devices engraved on tombs and sepulchral memorials of a date anterior to the year 1700 as at present known to exist in those churches of the county of Bedford whose names are indicated in the succeeding table. The legends are carefully reduced to a given scale, but the blazonry is generally an exact counterpart of the originals. For this purpose each church in the county has been carefully visited, many as often as four or five times, and the drawings have been in every case taken back and compared with the actual monuments. In those churches whose names are omitted in the indexes nothing was discovered of interest congenial with the present design. Its compilation has occupied the leisure hours of 10 years, and now comprises many a precious trace of the labour of loving hands who worked in its progress." Each volume has a list of parishes at the front; and vols. i-iv have also an alphabetical list of the families referred to in the monumental inscriptions (i.e., in the phrase "daughter of Alexander Metcalfe of Hull", Metcalfe is also among the families indexed; but not an index of the coats of arms. (In vol. ii, though the list has been made for the index, the page numbers have not been filled in). Vol. v however has one index for monumental inscriptions and another for coats of arms.
