Father, originally form Devonshire, had been a soldier based in army barracks there, but had left and was a civilian lorry driver for a fruit merchant. Lived there until he joined air force aged 19 or 20. Mother was from Neith. (05 mins)He was the only one to go to High School. From 14 - 16 he was a postman-driver delivering to sub post offices. (10 mins)Learned to drive from his father. Never had to pass a driving test. Did RAF initial training in Weston Supermare and then a school teaching aircraft engine fitting. (15 mins)Then became an air gunner on coastal command looking for U-boats (German submarines). Bad memories of friends who died in the war. After the war, after a brief period with the Post Office in Bedford, joined Marston Valley brickworks as a driver. Enjoyed the work and companionship. Met wife at RAF Cranfield, when she was a WAF.
