- Admin/biog historyThe Twamley family lived in Bedford from the end of the last century until the 1940s. Both Herbert and his son Broughton Twamley were educated at Bedford School, and Herbert maintained links after his father's departure to Eastbourne by marrying Beatrice Isabella Mildred Butt, daughter of a prominent local citizen, William Butt. The family settled in Shakespeare Road, at number 7, close to the Butt family at 32 Shakespeare Road. Diana Butt, Mildred's sister, eventually took a house at 5 Lansdowne Road. The family was a large one, with strong links to the Church. James Twamley, father of Herbert, retired to Bedford after long service as a minister in Yorkshire, and another of his sons, Philip, became a clergyman. Herbert and Mildred had two children, William Herbert Broughton Twamley, a Cambridge academic, who died of TB in 1943, and Beatrice Twamley. Broughton Twamley married Phyllis Wray Bliss in 1923 and they had a daughter, Delia, in 1930. After Mildred's death in 1946, Herbert married again to a widow; Marion Ada Mount. James Herbert Twamley was known as Herbert. Beatrice Isabella Mildred Twamley nee Butt was known as Mildred. William Herbert Broughton Twamley was known as Broughton.
