Admin/biog history
Sydney Howard Lovell was the son of William George Lovell and Mary Howard Lovell, who died from peritonitis in 1891 at the early age of 13. His parents made provision in their wills [see X 880/4/1] for the founding and endowment of almshouses, for aged and infirm persons in the Bedford area, to serve as a memorial to their son. After their deaths neither their families, nor the surviving trustees, carried out the provisions of their wills. In the early 1920s Sydney Richard Wells took an interest in the investments, which had grown into a substantial sum, and applied for the appointment of new trustees, [see X 880/4/3 & 4], and execution of the terms of the will.
The construction of the homes, at Oakley, began in 1925 and were completed and opened in 1926, [for plans see RDBP 1/976 & 1043, and RDBP 2/271].
