Scope and Content
In addition to the regular business of Meetings (the appointment of chairman and vice-chairman, election and appointment of new trustees, passing annual accounts, recording interest on the War Loan Account etc.), the business recorded may be summarised as follows:
25 Oct 1906: letter of sympathy to George Sharman upon the death of his father; resignation of John George.
14 Nov 1907: William Brown's cottage (rent due; inspection and necessary repairs); letter of sympathy to Mrs. John George upon death of her husband.
13 Jun 1908: new thatching and other roof repairs, to be undertaken by Mr. Barrs and George Brown respectively, to Wm. Brown's cottage, costs to be repaid 10 annually.
26 Nov 1908: agreement to let cottage and land to John Ruff for yearly rent of 5.
24 Nov 1911: agreement to re-thatch the W. side of the Chapel and repair the Chapel cottage (George Brown to inspect and estimate cost).
20 Oct 1913: agreement, following application by William Gillett, to reduce rent for Chapel Close.
27 Jul 1916: agreement that 1/3 of the expenses incurred in supplying the pulpit during the vacancy caused by the death of Revd. G. Barnes be paid by the Trustees and 2/3 by Brookend Chapel; that the new minister be paid 7 10s. per quarter; and that the balance of the trust money be kept in hand for the necessary repairs to the trust property.
5 Jan 1917: agreement that the new minister's stipend be 7 per quarter and that 1 p.a. paid by the late minister to the Chapel keeper now be paid by the Trustees.
23 May 1922: J.A. Steers having given notice to pay off the mortgage held of him, agreement that the 100 be reinvested in the 5 p.c. War Loan.
12 Nov 1928: discussions re suggested scheme of Baptist Union for amalgamation of the churches, the Acting Trustee being instructed to write to the superintendent of the area and ask 'if their [sic] is any likelihood of the work at Brookend being continued under the condition existing during the pastorate of the Rev. H. G. Stembridge'; agreement that in the event of a scheme being carried into effect, such scheme will not be accepted by the Trustees.
21 July 1931: decision, after inspection, to re-thatch the Chapel House; report by Mr. Hawkins 'that he part let the Cotage [sic] to Mr. A. Fensome'.
14 July 1932: decision to convert the 5% War Loan into 3% stock.
4 May 1933: much discussion re 'great expense...conserning the Pasters stypend' and proposal that he be paid 2 per month; members having visited the cottage (repairs having been ordered by the R.D.C.), resolution that an estimate be obtained for thatching and woodwork.
31 May 1934: Mr. A. Wagstaff asked to see Mr. Parrot re 'the thatch Blowing up on the Cotage [sic]'.
1 Aug 1935: decision to proceed with thatching the Chapel; and agreement to reduce the rent of the Chapel Field to 2 p.a.
26/28[?] May 1936: Chairman reported that Mr. Fensom 'wanted a Bedroom flooring...this was left to the Chairman To appoint A Sub Committee if necessary; discussion re tarring of the Chapel Yard (left to the Chairman to get the work done if he could).
24 May 1938: Mr. Ruffs estimate for Mr. Fensome's floor accepted; and agreement 'that 4 posts be put down for the grave yard & Cottage'.
Note: the Minutes are entered into 'The Blue Bell Exercise Book', a lined exercise-book which has illustrated designs, based on engravings, on the covers. The back cover titled 'Geographical Terms' shows illustrations of 'Parallels', 'Meridians', 'Tropics & Polar Circles' and 'Zones' at the corners, and various geographical features (e.g. a delta, volcano, ice-berg atc.) framing a map of Europe, Scandinavia, and N.Africa.
