Letter to Mr Samuel May Strange from Halford 11 Aug 1883 My Dear Children I was very pleased to have a letter from dear Pollie. I thought it would be right to send a few lines but really have nothing to send in the shape of news. I am well in health but feel that old age is making its rapid strides on me. My walks are not so long or so pleasurable as formerly, I find I must give up things I used so much to enjoy. I have given up going to Vernon, the walk is too long it is a very great denial but I hope and feel all is for the best, each little enjoyment as age creeps on if spared a little longer must be given up. I hope I shall be able to go to that source from whom we derive every comfort. Thomas Butler a Friend I have sat by in Meeting of many years was found dead in his bed on Monday morning. I walked round the ground after meeting, he seemed quite well and very cheerful. When I went to meeting on Sunday morning his place being vacant disturbed my mind very much. I hope Jonny [?] and Nelly will enjoy their holiday also Edie when she comes. I hear that J Reese has got through another operation and I hear is better. All being well I am going to dine with Edwin tomorrow. How fast the days are drawing in we shall soon have autumn upon us. No doubt the dear children will enjoy seeing their cousin making a boat for them I think him more expert with his hands than fluent with his tongue. Give lots of kisses to the dear children and lots of love and accept a very large share yourselves from your very affectionate Father Love to all those who are with you. Farewell dear children I hope you will be able to make this scroll out my hand is shaking very much. Envelope: Purple one penny stamp.
