Emily Howland to Samuel May Strange and Mary Ann Strange (nee Halford) 28 Aug 1872 Sherwood N.Y. 28.8.1872 Dear friends With this I send the little gift our dear Edward wished his brother to have in memory of him. He valued it as the gift of a friend who brought it from Italy I think, it is said to be made from pressed rose leaves. Edward could not decide what would be fitting to send to his new sister, he thought he had nothing that he liked to offer her, so I have chosen the book given him by his brothers & sisters on his 10th birthday and his three napkins. The Bible I thought you would both prize. The wristlets were knit and given him by his sisters. Your charming letter to him which I took the liberty to read, came too late. If he could only have received it how much pleasure it would have given him! But it is all long past now, and he beyond the " shadows of Earth's little while." Please accept my heartiest good wishes, I shall always feel a deep interest in those who were dear to Edward though henceforth nothing should cause a further knowledge of them. I send the "trip to Wensleydale" because I remember E. said his brother Samuel copied it, it may recall a past delight. Very truly yours Emily Howland. [15.10.72] [A.C.M. to S.M.S.] [Inside flap of empty envelope] Thanks for the hint I should not have written as I did had I known of your loss.
