Mary Ellen Strange to Edward Harris Strange Jan 1851 Ackworth Dear Papa Although I expected to receive a letter some time ago from you yet I thought this was about the best opportunity I should have for some time for writing to thee. I have opened the great hamper though I had to go to the Inn before they would bring it; the slippers came in useful on second day for we went a walk in the afternoon and came home very tired. We are quite unfortunate about our gardens this year as it will be of no use sowing seeds or buying plants as they will all be spoiled after the vacation and put into a different place. We have begun our examination questions and are in a fine way about knowing our number. I have seen Caroline Watson several times she went out to the in the other day with some girls & boy relations & friends of the Bradys of Newcastle upon Tyne whom she has found to be her cousins. I hope thou wilt write to me soon and tell me all about thy journeys both to Manchester and home I fancied thee just setting off on second day morning. The Pumphreys told me to tell thee that they were very much obliged to thee for the honey tho' I have not seen them since it was opened. I am very much obliged to you for the contents of the hamper and I think I have nothing more to say so with very dear love believe me as ever Thy affectionate Mary Ellen 17.1.1851 Samuel May, aged 78 born 16 11.1772 died 17.1.1851 buried Ampthill F.B.G
