Samuel May to Mary Ellen Strange 5 April 1849 Tottenham 4th Mo 5th 1849 My beloved Mary Ellen I have my dear been wishing for some time past to address a few lines to thee, but my mind has been so much occupied with passing events that I could scarcely find a suitable opportunity to do it. Since the loss of thy precious Mamma I have not been equal to much writing, the bereavement has been very severe to us all, but I hope my dear that thou art endeavouring as well as the rest of us to be entirely resigned to the will of an All wise Providence, who we are taught to believe does all things well, and although the loss to us is keenly felt by all of us, yet we have the consolation in believing that her happy spirit is for ever centred in heaven beyond all trouble & pain, it is a satisfaction to me to hear that thou hast several times lately written to thy dear Papa, who is much comforted by thy attention and I hope thou wilt continue to write frequently. I receive an account of dear baby every few days she appears to be getting on nicely the rest are all well, thou wilt be pleased to hear that I have been to see Sammy he was well but the dear boy appears to feel his loss - they have now fifteen boys - it is a great comfort to me as well as thy dear Papa that thyself & thy brother are placed with such kind and valued friends who will I have no doubt do everything they can to comfort you. Wilt thou present my kind love to Thomas Pumphrey & wife also to Ann Pumphrey - Luke Howard is here and intending to leave for Ackworth next week, and I intend to send thee a book or two by him. Since I began this a nice account has been received from Ampthill, they are pretty well and baby very lively.- Having another letter to write I must conclude this and with very dear love in which all around me unite I remain thy very affectionate Grandpapa, Samuel May P.S. It will afford me pleasure to hear from thee whenever thou inclines to write, and in another week I expect to be at Ipswich -
