Thos Pumphrey to Edward Harris Strange 9 Mar 1849 Ackworth School 3 mo 9.1849 My dear friend, How truly & how deeply do we sympathise with thee in thy present bereavement. As one, who, in a similar affliction, has known the consolation of the Father of mercies to be abundantly & marvellously poured forth, would I tenderly commend thee to the compassionate kindness of thy sympathising Lord, believing that he will sustain & soothe thee - & in future days care graciously for thee & others - only keep near. Abide in Christ & thou art safe - Thou hast the Christian's source of comfort in reference to thy dear Priscilla, believing that she was of the Great Shepherd's flock, & that she is now safe in his everlasting fold of safety, peace & glory - & as a Christian believer thyself, thou knowest thy Lord to be the rock of thy refuge - Thy precious child was for a while greatly distressed, & though she is now become calm, yet her sorrow is deep - she has our tender sympathy; and shall receive all the balm, which we poor creatures, know how to bestow - She has made no allusion to going home, or had not when I saw her last, & therefore we have not referred to it - She desires her very dear love to thee, her brothers & sisters - & to all of you - We rejoice thou hast thy sister Caroline & other kind relatives about thee - My love to her & thy brother Edward - also to thy dear Father S.M.- Cousin Ann Pumphrey unites with me herein Thy affectionate sympathising Friend Thomas Pumphrey.
