Title
Samuel May to Priscilla Strange 16 March 1848
Ampthill 16/3/48
My dear Priscilla
Edward has taken the journey instead of Bentley, and he wished me to write to thee, and to express the satisfaction it was to us to receive thy report of dear Sammy, we were also much pleased to find that Edward had been to see him, we hoped to hear again from thee as soon as any plan is fixed, and I hope by this time M.A.Bayes is returned which will be some relief to thee, it is a great satisfaction to hear that Edward approved of R S's treatment.
I will now give thee a little information of our movements, in the first place I may tell thee that all the dear ones are well, Dorey [Theodore] had had however three restless nights owing to two teeth being near at hand, and the gums much swollen, & last evening T.Chapman saw him & lanced his gums, he said they required it as they were much inflamed, he was very much relieved by it, and has had a very good night, and is happy & cheerful this morning and baby [Annie May Strange] is quite bright too - she was looking rather pale yesterday but has recover'd her good looks after a nice night's rest, she has also more teeth near, Mary takes the children out when the weather will permit and Emma goes too in the afternoon, Gertrude is quite handy waiting on Mary and often takes her meals with them upstairs -
Bentley and his wife are nicely settled in. Ann left them yesterday as her Cousin is unwell - I called on them after Meeting on first day morning & Edward & the young men in the evening - we had two sorts of cake handed of their own make and very good it was, as they are total abstainers there was no wine which was very prudent -
There is likely to be a vacancy at the Union and Bentley's brother intends to make another application, the Relieving Officer has conducted himself badly and is suspended by the board until an investigation is made, he has had some goods of us and I have no doubt we shall loose [sic] it -
Nothing has yet been done about the Chequers, it is said they will pay the whole eventually, but I am rather doubtful of that - This is certainly a time for loosing [sic], did I tell thee that Selina White is going out as a teacher - her Mother were here yesterday and took tea with us, they had some articles at Shop but came principally to see thee -
We have a mortgage from the Duke, he wishes to have our wants stated on paper and he will take it under consideration the committee meet tomorrow to prepare it -
Yesterday John gathered the Swans Egg & Moorfowl Egg pears, there is nearly a bushel of the latter & more than half of the former and 35 pears from the tree by the Stable.-
We have been rather more busy in the Shop the last week or two, we have got some very nice French Merinos which we can sell @ 4/- p.yd. M.White had two dresses - -
D.Grimes is about the same as she has been for some weeks. Poor Millard is deceased & buried, J.Clapham's child is rather better -
My love to M.A.Bayes if returned & to her daughters & accept a large portion for thyself and Sammy. Edward is not returned or he would join
Thy affectionate Father Samuel May
