Title
Ann May to Priscilla Strange at Ipswich 10 Aug 1842
Ampthill 3rd Day
My dearest P.
Lest thou shouldst think my hand is seized with the sticking palsy I must tell thee that I have just finished clear starching the first since Y.M. it is nearly post time & every minute I am on the listen for some very dear visitor to alight at the door no other than E.C.M. & his Lucy Ann & Sophy thy E. being gone in the chaise as an escort a fine hot ride they will have, but after such a preamble I may add that E. requested me to tell thee that on first day evening Elizabeth being left to mind the house alone was in the garden with Wiltshire so that on our return from meeting there was no entrance H.Headly had to get in at window when the two governors interrupted the pair it afterward came out that this was no new thing so after a consultation it was thought best for Edward to give her warning which he did after dinner yesterday - she seemed rather high saying she had no doubt of getting another place but called on me afterwards & on my speaking of her thoughtless conduct she wept very much thinking it a hard sentence for such a trifle as it was mere civility towards each other - however we all think it safest & I state it to get thy opinion by return also whether I shall take any steps to secure Eliza Sharpling a message was received yesterday for thee & me to get her a place - E. & I think if thou approves we cannot do better - provided she is sound "wind & limb" - say what wages also whether she shall at any rate come when Eliza's month is up until the M.M as by way of trial as to health &c.
Thy F. is better intends going to town to-morrow on fifth day or whenever E.C.M. goes, then proceed to Ipswich by steamer -
A letter of information was received from Francis this morning about the Orwell &c. All at P.[?] as usual - Georgiana has been here a week she went as far as Woburn with thy Edward.
This morning's post brought a letter from Louisa Hooper - they are finely enjoying a country seat near Dorking, Emily Carry & Charles to join them next week -
Thy Uncle & Aunt Arch are at Wandsworth -
Last 6th day I was working at my hardest when who should call but James & Kate they came to tea - I not previously knowing they were here -
On 1st day after { } had feeding our Tom Pouter I pleased with thinking how the dear girls would be amused with seeing him & his mate feed their young had the vexation to find his mangled lady at the end of the barn opposite the mulberry tree - they have dispatched the thief today that enormous sandy cat -
Much as I long to see you all I hope thy F. will stay long enough to do him good not go about visiting but stay quietly in the garden where I hope you are regaled with fruit
Thy affectionate Mother
