*missing Edward Strange of Philadelphia to Samuel May c.14 Oct 1838 1st day Evening [E.S.to S.M. on end of 181] My dear Father Thy suggestion respecting John Youill is a very good one and I think some arrangement should be made as early as convenient as I am pretty certain that he will not be of much use to us in the Shop. Should he so far recover to return he will scarcely be able to do anything more than a little writing or some other equally light work. In that case it will be necessary to look out for some additional help on that side. Looking at the subject in this way we are quite of the opinion, that as you are so near, it would be desirable to see his Mother on the subject. As regards Thomas something I think should be done. Joseph May's business I suppose is now settled, and as Thomas is to be given up to accompany his parents, it seems desirable to liberate him as soon as possible. He will be of little use to us now the question is settled and as he is so fond of exercising his mechanical genius it is a great pity he should not devote the little time he will have in this country to the acquisition of mechanical information, particularly as such knowledge will be of incalculable importance on the houseless plains of South Australia. We have been quite busy in the shop with customers, but have had much less to do in the counting house than usual. I have been buying a good deal of wool which I hope will do us no harm.- With dear love to the whole of your seeming happy circle I remain Thy Affectionate Son E.H.Strange Samuel May Postmark :AMPTHILL Seal : Priscilla in a square.
